Put On Humility Today

Pride can certainly be a downfall for me, and I suspect it can be for you. Sometimes there's no discernable consequence of it, but, more times than I care to admit, pride has worked against me.

The Bible tells us to clothe ourselves with humility, to put it on. Colossians 3:12 says “put on" humility. Likewise, James 4:6, Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. So when we get caught up in pride, God actually opposes us. But when we stay in humility we experience God's grace and power. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you (1 Peter 5:6).

One of my favorite parables (Luke 14:7-11) is Jesus talking about picking the place of honor. When Jesus went to eat in the house of one of the prominent people in the community, he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table and told them this parable: “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Can you related to that? I know I can.

So, Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves (Philippians 2:3).
